Finding the Right Class

The programs below set out the classes usually taken by young dancers/recreational students, and the full suite of classes available to competitive dancers. If you have any questions regarding the program that is best for your child, please contact us for help. Young Dancer Program-recreational

Young dancers ages 2-6 who are looking to build the basics will typically take the following classes. This is a subset of the full set of classes available though the competitive stream, outlined below. Students can start at any age. Opportunities include performing in our year end recital. 

Young ballet Designed to explore natural musical responses, enjoy a variety of dance fundamentals and develop confidence in movement and mime. The teachers ensure that classes are presented in a warm and caring atmosphere where each child’s experience can be a healthy and happy one.

  1. Young ballet or creative movement ballet or pre-primary ballet
  2. Young tap/jazz combo

Mini program-Recreational and competitive

Young dancers ages 6-9 who are looking to compete will typically take the following classes. There is also an option in the mini program to dance recreationally and select the styles your dancer wishes to take. If your dancer selects a style with multiple classes per week, they must attend both classes. This is to ensure that dancers build the required technique as well as the skills to put a dance together. Students can start at any age. Opportunities include performing in our Nutcracker production, in RAD ballet exams, in competition and in our year end recital.

pre-teen program-Recreational

 Dancers ages 10-13 who are looking to take a couple classes per wee and just dance for fun. Dancer have the option of the following classes/ styles. Students can start at any age. If your dancer selects a style with multiple classes per week, they must attend both classes. This is to ensure that dancers build the required technique as well as the skills to put a dance together. Opportunities include performing in our Nutcracker production, in RAD ballet exams and in our year end recital. 

  1. Grade 5 ballet
  2. Jazz Choreography and Jazz Technique
  3. Tap Choreography and Tap Technique
  4. Hip Hop

Inclusive program-Recreational

Trio Danceworks offers dance classes for persons of all abilities in Kanata, Ottawa.  These classes are intended for children, teens and young adults who are looking for a dance class adapted to their abilities. All are welcome, including those with autism, Down’s syndrome, and physical disabilities.

We partnered with CHEO in setting up our dance for all abilities class and their may be more opportunities to have further classes supported by CHEO.

There is no dress code for dance for all abilities classes – just wear comfortable clothing.

Junior/teen program-competitive

Dancers ages 10-14 who are looking to compete will typically take the following classes.  Dancers must take all classes in a style. This is to ensure that dancers build the required technique as well as the skills to put a dance together. Students can start at any age. Opportunities include performing in our Nutcracker production, in RAD ballet exams, in competition and in our year end recital.

senior Program-competitive

Dancers ages 14-18 who are looking to compete will typically take the following classes. Dancers must take all classes in a style. This is to ensure that dancers build the required technique as well as the skills to put a dance together. Students can start at any age. Opportunities include performing in our Nutcracker production, in RAD ballet exams, in competition and in our year end recital.

Style Descriptions

Ballet
It is most important for any student who is serious about his/her dancing to take ballet lessons. The Royal Academy of Dance is the most internationally recognized system of ballet training and examination. It is represented in 72 countries around the world. The Pre-Primary to Pre-Professional Children’s program offers ballet training through gradual progressions, demanding no more of a young body than it can easily cope with.  The Royal Academy of Dance offers Syllabus levels and graded studies in Classical Ballet, Free Movement and Character Dance with a series of exercises and enchainements appropriate to each grade level.

Tap
Tap classes begin at age 5 and are offered at all levels including Professional. All tap classes are based upon the technique and style of Rhythm Tap and Broadway Musicals. This system of tap dancing encourages technical excellence, clarity, shading, syncopation and rhythmic patterning. Dancers who complete their studies through the levels to Pre-Professional class will have the skills necessary to dance professionally in Tap and Musical Theatre Productions.

Tap technique
This class designed for the serious  Tap student who wishes to upgrade his/her technical skill. It offers an in-depth, intensive study of advanced techniques of Tap. This course is to be taken in conjunction with Tap and is not to be taken instead of the regular program. The focus is on skill development only, therefore, it will not lead to a choreographed number in the recital. All members of the Competitive Teams are required to take this class.

Jazz
Jazz classes are offered from the age of 5 years. Jazz is a high energy style of dance that encourages dynamic performance as well as excellent technique. Jazz terminology, introduction of new step combinations, and dance variations are challenging but fun as the student is able to progress at a rate consistent with his or her own abilities.

Jazz Technique
This class is a high energy, dynamic course designed for the serious jazz or ballet student who wishes to upgrade his/her technical skill. It offers an in-depth, intensive study of advanced techniques including multiple pirouettes, advanced movements of elevation as well as increased strength and flexibility. This course is to be taken in conjunction with jazz or ballet and is not to be taken instead of the regular program. The focus is on skill development only, therefore, it will not lead to a choreographed number in the recital. All members of the Competitive Teams are required to take this class.

Contemporary
Contemporary dance training is offered to students beginning at the Grade 1 level. It explores all movements of the body and how to create shapes and pictures through dance. 

Hip Hop
Hip hop is an energetic hard hitting style of dance. The music has a strong beat that lends itself fast, strong and sharp movements. 

Acro
In acro dance students will learn basic acrobatic movements such as walk overs, rolls and hand stands. This is also a great class to improve strength and flexibility.
